Earlier this summer the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) published an annual report concerning the ongoing activities and accomplishments of the Health Care Fraud and Abuse Control Program. This joint program was established 24 years ago when Congress enacted the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA). The program serves to identify and prosecute health care fraud, prevent future fraud and abuse, and protect federal health care programs and their beneficiaries.
