This week, the OIG released a Special Fraud Alert concerning speaker programs, which may be found here. While the fraud alert discusses speaker programs created and maintained by pharmaceutical and medical device manufacturers, the OIG's guidance and concerns appear to apply equally to similar programs commonly used by clinical laboratories. This week, we will more closely examine the OIG's fears as well as discuss compliance policies and procedures laboratories can implement to mitigate the risks identified in the latest OIG Fraud Alert.
