Many laboratories have implemented electronic result reporting systems, which deliver results via online portals or other mechanisms. As with any reporting system, mistakes will occur, even if very infrequently, and labs will accidently send results to the wrong ordering physician and/or patient. Many laboratories still rely on fax mechanisms to deliver results, which are also susceptible to errors.
