Last week, we reviewed an OIG report on Medicare expenditures made in 2018 for laboratory services. That report indicated that despite the implementation of PAMA fee schedule reductions, Medicare actually spent $459 million more in 2018 than the program spent in 2017. That report also includes an examination of the total amounts Medicare paid in calendar year 2018 for the top 25 tests. PAMA mandates that the OIG publish such a report annually and the 2018 analysis is the fifth time the OIG has completed this study.
