Today, we begin a three part series about the coding, billing, and compliance requirements of allowing providers to order clinical laboratory panels and profiles. This week, we will discuss the requirements that pertain to the panels created and listed by the American Medical Association (AMA) in the 2019 CPT®. These panels are often referred to as organ and disease-oriented panels and are included in their own subsection of the CPT Manual. Some of the most frequently ordered groups of tests are included in this group of panels such as the Basic Metabolic Panels (CPT codes 80047 and 80048) and the Lipid Panel (80061). Next week....
