Applicable provisions of the 2014 Protecting Access to Medicare Act (PAMA) require CMS to issue unique HCPCS codes for laboratory tests when requested by a laboratory or manufacturer. The AMA CPT® Editorial Panel fulfilled this requirement by creating a new subsection under the Pathology/Laboratory section of the CPT entitled, "Proprietary Laboratory Analysis (PLA)" codes. The first PLA codes became effective in January 2017. Since that time, the AMA has published numerous PLA codes, so that now that section of the CPT includes 42 unique PLA codes describing a wide variety of laboratory procedures.
