Many laboratories provide limited free testing to potential or existing customers so that the customers can evaluate and/or compare the laboratory's testing and services. Customers may desire to assess the clinical utility or value of the testing and/or evaluate how the laboratory operates. In addition, some customers wish to compare the laboratory's testing and results to another laboratory with which the provider already has a relationship. Clinical labs may provide some limited testing for these comparison/evaluation purposes, but they must take care not to implicate federal and state anti-kickback provisions.
