CodeMap® Compliance Briefing: April 23, 2015
Editor's Welcome: Modifier -59 is used to identify procedures and services that are not normally reported together, but are appropriate under the circumstances. As such, it is one of the most frequently used and abused modifiers. Laboratories routinely utilize the -59 modifier to overcome CCI edits and to identify separate and distinct services, which are reported using the same CPT® code. Today, we will review the proper use of the -59 modifier, as well as CMS’s creation of a new set of sub-modifiers that may eventually be used to replace it. As always, please send any questions, comments, and/or suggestions to us via email.
