In the past, the traditional way to order lab tests and retrieve results involved the shipping or faxing of paper requisition forms. However, more and more clinical laboratories are implementing electronic systems, often web-based, which allow customers to more efficiently order tests and access results. We recently have begun to hear proposals from our subscribers to provide equipment, such as computers, tablets, and printers, to support these electronic order entry systems. As today's briefing will demonstrate, the provision of such equipment can be structured so that these arrangements achieve compliance with applicable fraud and abuse provisions, however laboratories must be careful.
