Earlier this year, Congress enacted the Protecting Access to Medicare Act of 2014 (PAMA), which will in the future profoundly affect how laboratories are reimbursed by the Medicare program. A primary goal of this legislation is to determine what private payers reimburse for laboratory procedures and subsequently set Medicare rates to match. The process will most likely be arduous and painful, but Congress hopes it will result in a more equitable clinical laboratory fee schedule.
