Most of our subscribers have heard that the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) recently finalized regulations that require clinical laboratories to allow patients access to their test results. Many sources have described the recent changes to both CLIA and HIPAA that created this new requirement for laboratories. However, we have seen little guidance concerning how laboratories should actually provide patients with access to this protected health information. Most other types of health care provider organizations have struggled with this requirement for years, but because of the recently fixed limitations of CLIA and HIPAA, many laboratories have not yet had the same experience with opening up their records to patients.....
