CMS has proposed major changes to laboratory test reimbursement starting as early as 2014. The 2014 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule (PFS) Proposed Rule includes a proposal to review and revise the amounts paid for all tests currently on the Clinical Laboratory Fee Schedule (CLFS) starting with calendar year 2015. In addition, the 2014 Outpatient Prospective Payment System (OPPS) Proposed Rule proposes bundling most outpatient laboratory tests into a single facility payment, much like inpatient DRGs. Bundling could start as early as calendar year 2014.
