An ongoing administrative and customer service headache for most clinical laboratories is how to handle requests from patients for test results. Patients often mistakenly believe that legislation such as the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) grants them unrestricted access to their medical records, including laboratory test results. However, as will be explained in today's CodeMap® Compliance Briefing, other provisions of federal and state law may prevent laboratories from releasing results directly to patients.
