Today's CodeMap® Compliance Briefing discusses Medicare's newly established coverage requirements for screening of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). While most people would think that Medicare beneficiaries pose a much reduced risk of contracting STDs, statistics from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), and the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) indicate otherwise. In 2011, both groups published some surprising numbers. For instance, in the five years from 2005 to 2009, the number of reported cases of syphilis and chlamydia among those 55 and older increased 43%. Also, in areas that include large numbers of retirement communities such as Florida and Arizona, the numbers are even more surprising. During the same time period, officials in central Florida reported an 87% increase of cases of syphilis and chlamydia among those 55 and older. As a result, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) recently created screening benefits....
