CodeMap® Compliance Briefing: 2/5/2010
Editor's Welcome:
Routine urinalysis, as well as quantitative tests employing urine as the specimen source, include some of the most commonly performed clinical laboratory tests. During 2008, Medicare paid $48.6 million for more than 11 million routine urinalysis procedures (dipstick plus microscopic analysis). Note: the most recent Medicare utilization data available is from 2008. Over the past 10 years, the number of claims for automated urinalysis methods has steadily increased. Automated dipstick readers are now employed for over 60% of all urinalysis tests. Even though Medicare reimbursement for individual urinalysis procedures is modest, the large number of tests performed can result in significant liability if the proper codes are not utilized. Today, we will summarize the proper use of urinalysis codes and how best to ensure compliance with current coding conventions. Please let us know if you have any questions or comments.
Sincerely,
Gregory Root, Esq.
