CodeMap® Compliance Briefing: 10/02/2009
Editor's Welcome:
Presently, the social security provisions that set forth the Medicare program do not include coverage of screening tests and services. In other words, Medicare does not reimburse providers for tests and procedures that are performed in the absence of signs or symptoms of disease or injury. In the past, preventive care or screening test coverage had to be specifically authorized by Congress. However, recent legislation now gives CMS the authority to create coverage for screening tests that are medically reasonable and necessary for the early detection of illness.
This week, we will discuss CMS' recent proposal to create coverage for HIV screening using the authority mentioned above. As always, please let us know via email, if you have any questions, comments, or suggestions.
