This week's compliance briefing provides an early look at the 2003 CPT code changes for radiology. Of the 42 new and revised Radiology codes in the 2003 CPT, 17 involve changing the old term "computerized axial tomography" to "computed tomography". However, more important changes have been made in the codes describing obstetrical ultrasound procedures. New Codes for Obstetrical Ultrasound Procedures
The existing four codes describing ultrasound of the pregnant uterus have been revised extensively and five new codes have been added. The following set of new and revised codes should be used after Jan. 1, 2003. Both old and new codes are valid from Jan. 1 to Mar. 31, 2003. After March 31, only the new codes will be accepted for Medicare claims.
