Comparative effectiveness is the term commonly used to describe evidenced-based research that compares different health services or treatment options for the same condition. Comparative effectiveness is rapidly becoming an important issue in Medicare payment for new health care technology, including laboratory tests. Congress recently doubled federal funding for comparative effectiveness research in its FY08 budget to $30 million, further evidence of the growing importance of this research tool to the congressional efforts of reducing health care spending and improving quality of care.
