FRIDAY COMPLIANCE BRIEFING: 7/12/2002
EDITOR'S WELCOME
Welcome back, I trust everyone had an enjoyable Fourth of July holiday. As promised, this Friday we will conclude our discussion of the direct billing rules of Medicare. You will remember that two weeks ago (6/28/2002) we examined the direct billing rules as they apply to reference laboratories and physician office laboratories. In particular we looked at the 70/30 rule and how it applies to reference labs, but not to POLs. If you need to refresh your memory you can always check out past Friday Compliance Briefings in the Newsletters section of our website.
This week we will examine how the direct billing rules apply to hospital laboratories and diagnostic service providers such as radiologists and pathologists. I warn you in advance that the direct billing rules contain layers upon layers of exceptions and can be confusing. Hopefully we will make sense of at least some of the rules and exceptions today.
Sincerely,
Gregory Root, Esq.
