Most laboratory tests are included in the Medicare Laboratory Fee Schedule. However, some "technical component only" CPT codes are found on the Medicare Physician Fee Schedule. These tests are not subject to the current five-year freeze imposed on the Medicare Laboratory Fee Schedule and can change when new cost information is used to revise the Relative Value Units (RVUs) that determine their payment. As discussed below, the technical component for a number of codes will increase significantly starting January 2006 when the new Medicare Physician Fee Schedule takes effect.
