Last week we discussed Medicare's proposed rules for cardiovascular and diabetes screening tests. This week we will examine yet another expansion in Medicare benefits that will become effective in the near future. Starting January 1, 2004, Medicare will cover a "Welcome to Medicare Physical Exam" for individuals who become eligible for Medicare benefits. This exam is designed to provide beneficiaries with education, counseling, and referrals for other preventive services separately covered by Medicare Part B. This new benefit should generate significant new revenue for both labs and other diagnostic providers. As always, please email us with any questions about this or other topics.
