Medicare Reimbursement for Blood and Blood Products
When a hospital purchases blood or blood products from a community blood bank, or runs its own blood bank and charges for the blood or blood product, the blood and blood products are billed using revenue codes 0380 through 0389 (Blood Products) along with the appropriate HCPCS code. The amount billed should reflect the hospital's charge.
When a hospital does not pay for the blood or blood product, it usually incurs an administrative cost from a blood bank. In this case, the hospital bills the administrative or processing charge using revenue code 0390 ....
