Editor's Welcome:
CMS has published the 2004 changes to the Medicare Laboratory Fee Schedule which will become effective Jan 1, 2004. As part of the 2004 fee schedule, they have addressed several problems with existing hematology codes which were introduced last year. Today, we will discuss these changes in detail.
Also, next week there will be no CodeMap Compliance Briefing in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday. Please continue to send us your comments, questions, and suggestions. We will try to answer all email questions individually or in future CodeMap Compliance Briefings.
Sincerely,
Dr. Charles B. Root
Present Hematology CPT Coding
As established in last year's CPT and Medicare Laboratory Fee Schedule, only two CPT codes are presently available to report automated CBCs, 85025 (CBC with automated WBC differential), and 85027 (CBC without automated WBC differential). Both of these codes include the following CBC components and may not be unbundled if all components are performed.
