FRIDAY COMPLIANCE BRIEFING: 6/14/2002
EDITOR'S WELCOME
This week we will be discussing the coverage criteria and reimbursement for bone density studies. Providers that perform these procedures may be surprised to learn that there are significant differences in payment for bone density studies depending on the technique used and where the procedure is performed. Bone density procedures are covered by Medicare in both the Physician Fee Schedule (for patients treated by physician practices and free standing imaging centers) and the Outpatient Prospective Payment System (for patients treated as hospital outpatients). As you will see, the location where the bone density study is performed can make a big difference in the amount Medicare will reimburse for the service.
We continue to receive useful comments and questions. As always please feel free to contact us with questions, concerns, or ideas for future Friday Compliance Briefings.
Sincerely,
Gregory Root, Esq.
